[+] Applying to the Conference

Q. Who is eligible to apply to the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference?

A. Applications are open to women living with Parkinson’s who live in the United States or Puerto Rico. At this time, applications are not open to female care partners.


Q. What does PDF look for in attendees for the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference?

A. PDF looks for applicants with diverse backgrounds/perspectives who share an interest in improving the health and well-being of women living with Parkinson’s disease. Preference is given to women who have previously demonstrated leadership within their community and their commitment to addressing the needs of women with Parkinson's disease. Q. If I require a care partner’s assistance on site, am I eligible to apply ?

A. Yes, women requiring care partners to attend with them are eligible to apply. Please note however, that coverage of care partner expenses will be determined on a case-by-case basis.


Q. What should I prepare before starting the online application process?

A. The application asks for:

  • your answers to a few short essay questions asking why you would like to attend the Women and PD Conference; how you are currently involved in the PD community; and how you envision using this experience to help the community move forward;
  • a copy of your resume, or, if unavailable, a brief listing of your relevant positions and employers, volunteer experience and educational history; and
  • a reference, preferably someone who can comment on your leadership experience and commitment to issues related to women living with Parkinson’s.

Q. What is the application deadline for the September Women and PD Conference?

A. Applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 PM ET on Friday, July 31, 2015, through the PDF website.


Q. When can I expect to hear if I have been accepted to participate in the Women and PD Conference?

A. Applicants will be notified in early August of their application status.


Q. Will any expenses for the Women and PD Conference covered by PDF?

A. For those who are selected to attend the Women and PD Conference all expenses (registration, travel, hotel, accommodation, meals, etc.) are covered by the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Please note however, that for those who require a care partner to attend, coverage of additional expenses will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Q. What is the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference?

A. The PDF Women and PD Conference is a three-day meeting which brings together female community leaders living with PD who are interested in improving the health and well-being of women with PD. The conference will provide a supportive retreat-like setting in which women can gain the information, tools and leadership skills they need to advocate for the specific needs of women with PD. Applicants who are accepted to the conference will be expected to share their knowledge (by organizing at least one Women and PD event or a series of events in their community) to help other women live well and better manage their disease, and to be an advocate for the needs of women with PD.


Q. What types of topics will be covered at the PDF Women and PD Conference?

A. At the conference, attendees will learn about a variety of topics including: what is known and unknown about the differences in PD as experienced by males and females; key issues of importance that are not commonly discussed, such as sexuality, self-care and wellness; and the tools and skills for organizing women and PD events in their own communities.


Q. Who will lead the sessions at the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference?

A. The purpose of this conference is to bring female leaders together to build a community of women passionate about taking action to promote the health and well-being of women living with Parkinson’s disease. To best accomplish this, PDF has included experts across multiple fields — including neurology and movement disorders, psychology, physical therapy, self-care and other disciplines — to give attendees the tools to be successful with their own post-conference projects.

[+] Expectations and Opportunities for Attendees

Q. What type of volunteer commitment is expected of attendees after taking part in the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference?

A. Applicants who are accepted to the conference will be expected to share their knowledge (by organizing at least one Women and PD event or a series of events in their community) to help other women live well and better manage their disease, and to be an advocate for the needs of women with PD. This project should be completed within one year of attending the Women and PD Conference.


Q. After attending the Women and Parkinson’s Disease Conference, will attendees receive ongoing support from PDF?

A. PDF staff will be available for volunteer consultation and for facilitation of communication among attendees so as to create a collaborative environment that will support the success of participants as they move forward with their projects and events. PDF does not currently offer funding for the projects initiated by Conference attendees.
