Q:My Mother was just diagnosed as having “early stage Parkinson’s.” My question is: How does this disorder progress? At this time, her main problem is her inability to walk well. She shuffles and uses a walker (sometimes) but is mostly in a wheelchair. Thank you. (VR)Show Answer

Q:My sister, aged 49, has just been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's. I am very concerned about her but don't want to pry too much. What is the average prognosis for someone like her -- like how soon will she become seriously disabled and what is her life expectancy? I don't mean to be so blunt, but I need to know so I can respond to her appropriately. (anonymous)Show Answer

Q:My Father is seventy and has PD. He is currently in a nursing home in Pennsylvania (I'm in California). His symptoms are: tremors, limited mobility (with walker), slurred speech. I have looked for something to tell me what to expect in his future. How long do PD patients usually live? What will happen as the disease progresses? Since I'm so far away, I would like to get a feel for making plans to visit and the frequency of the visits. Any information you can supply me with would be greatly appreciated.Show Answer

Q:We have a family member in his sixties who has had Parkinson's since about 1993, with other complications such as rheumatoid arthritis.Show Answer
Until a few weeks ago, medication helped to provide some limited mobility.
But now this family member is simply unable to stand at all or do any basic
function with assistance, and has been hallucinating quite a bit, either due to
medication or the disease. What is the long-term prognosis for this disease?
All of the information seems geared towards those recently diagnosed or who
can at least maintain some semblance of normal routine in their lives, but
this individual is far beyond that stage, and we don't know what to expect
in the days/years ahead.
