Q:My 82-year-old Mother who was very active, recently suffered aShow Answer
heart attack (on January 2,2000). She had an angioplasty stent implant and is
on medications. She is also a diabetic with blood pressure problems. Weighing 130 lbs and being 5ft tall she is not overweight (although) she was overweight before.
One month ago while on 6.5mg of nitroglycerin, Lanoxin, plavix, Coumadin, atenolol, glucotrol and Glucophage, Zoloft and Ecotrin., (she was just taken off (3-1-00) the Lanoxin, Coumodin, Plavix and reduced to 2.5mg of Nitroglycerin) she had begun to experience hand tremors while on all these drugs and had stumbled while walking. There have been signs of some confusion as well. I am her daughter; I live with and take care of her. My question is: Her
cardiologist suggested I take her to a neurologist because he suspects she has Parkinson's! As we have no family history of this disease I wonder if the heart attack brought it on or perhaps it may be something else? (JM)

Q:My sister, aged 49, has just been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's. I am very concerned about her but don't want to pry too much. What is the average prognosis for someone like her -- like how soon will she become seriously disabled and what is her life expectancy? I don't mean to be so blunt, but I need to know so I can respond to her appropriately. (anonymous)Show Answer

Q:My Father is seventy and has PD. He is currently in a nursing home in Pennsylvania (I'm in California). His symptoms are: tremors, limited mobility (with walker), slurred speech. I have looked for something to tell me what to expect in his future. How long do PD patients usually live? What will happen as the disease progresses? Since I'm so far away, I would like to get a feel for making plans to visit and the frequency of the visits. Any information you can supply me with would be greatly appreciated.Show Answer
