Q:My husband has been diagnosed with PD for a little over three years (probably has been symptomatic for ten years prior to diagnosis) and I know from the answer to previous questions there will be some deterioration of his mind, but I am bewildered at how much deterioration there is and at how quickly it is happening. He has problems speaking, often can't find the words he wants. He can't remember simple requests even if they are written down and often only my return home from work will trigger the memory that something was supposed to be done. His inability to remember routine tasks such as turning out a light when he leaves a room or taking a daily bath is frustrating. His contribution to the work of maintaining a home is non-existent. His behavior or reaction to any stress is often that of a child, not the 58-year-old that he is. And more and more often I find my reaction to his behavior is impatience and anger which only aggravates an already bad situation. Is this mind slowdown common to PD or is something else going on here? Visits to his doctor have provided little in the way of help because conversation is very limited and John has managed to give appropriate responses to the doctor's questions. Only very recently has the nurse commented on John's "Parkinson's Mask." What should I do? Where do I turn now? What's going on? (anonymous)Show Answer

Q:A friend in his 70s has Parkinson's and his condition has progressed to the point he can't drive. He has retired totally from his work and apparently from all the varied activities in which he formerly participated. Often, he cannot be understood when he speaks. His daughter tells me he appears depressed. Having known this man for many years, I fear he must be suffering a great deal to be so inactive. He is a brilliant man with a quick, inquisitive mind. So my question is, are there devices which would allow him to operate a computer? And is there anybody in our area who is qualified to provide physical therapy to Parkinson's patients? Thank you.Show Answer

Q:My Father seems to be suffering from depression. Previously, he took "some medication" for this symptom, but the result was he began to have rather severe hallucinations, especially at night. Now he and my Mother are reluctant to try anything. Are there any new medicines that will relieve depression, and not have negative side-effects? (CJ)Show Answer
