Q:My 79-year-old mom has Parkinson's disease and sciatica. Between the Parkinson's and the sciatica, she has difficulty getting comfortable in bed. She often sleeps in her recliner, slumped over, in a position that looks very uncomfortable! Does that position (sitting slumped with your neck falling towards your chest) make sciatica worse? Can you offer any insight to proper positioning and alignment when one has Parkinson's and sciatica? (JT)Show Answer

Q:My mother has the disease and has chronic constipation and now is losing control of her bladder. She has had PD since 1995. Is this just part of it? She wants to have surgery for the bladder and they keep scoping her colon because of the constipation. Please tell me if this is just part of it or not. (YD)Show Answer

Q:My husband, age 59, was diagnosed with PD in June. His main complaint was a tremor on the right side. Recently we have noticed he is very gruff and defensive. Very reactionary. We have been very supportive. When I tried to talk to him and ask him about it, he claims he is not angry. He refuses to go to a support group or talk to anyone. In fact, he doesn't want anyone to know.Show Answer
Any ideas on how to be supportive yet help him realize how he is distancing his children and friends? (anonymous)

Q:My father in law was diagnosed as having Parkinson's a few years ago. He has lately started showing signs of paranoia...thinking that people are out to get him. Is this a part of the disease? Can it get dangerous? He has always been sort of a loner but lately has become more withdrawn than usual. (KB)Show Answer

Q:I perform morning care for a 75 yr. old gentlemen with Parkinson's. He has recently developed serious night sweats that cannot be attributed to anything. The doctor suggested that it was probably a function of the Parkinson's and/or the meds for same. Is there any literature on night sweats as it relates to Parkinson's?? Thanks. (TH)Show Answer

Q:My father has had Parkinson's Disease for the last 15 years approx. He recently wakes up at night and can't breathe. He goes purple in the face and struggles for breath for quite some time before his breath comes back. This is now also happening when he's awake, and happens approximately one to two times a day. It's very frightening for my mother who can do nothing only watch him struggle. His GP listened to his lungs and said they were clear, but suggested it might be a reaction to his medication. Surely if it was a reaction it would have showed itself before now? Have you any suggestions please? (anonymous)Show Answer
