PAN Alert: Strengthen the Voice of the Parkinsonís Community during August Recess
- Jul 16 2013
The Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) has received another important update from the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) about advocating for research funding.
Congress is scheduled to be on summer recess August 3 - September 8, and Members will be at home, meeting with constituents. This is a great opportunity to interact one-on-one with your elected officials and members of their staff to discuss the federal funding priorities of the Parkinson's community, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Department of Defense Parkinson's research program.
Because their schedules fill up quickly, we strongly encourage you to reach out now to the district offices of your Representative and Senators to schedule time in August to meet with them or a member of their staff.
Even if you are unable to schedule a meeting, there are still a number of ways that you can reach out to your Members of Congress and their staff to make your voice heard, from social media and letters to editor to town halls and events.
No matter how you choose to engage, it is critical for the Parkinson's community to deliver a strong message regarding the importance of preserving and strengthening federal funding for research. Because of automatic, across-the-board spending cuts (sequestration) that went into effect in March, research funding for diseases like Parkinson's has already faced cuts this year. We can't afford to let more cuts happen!
What You Can Do
Visit the PAN website for resources and to learn more about four things you can do to help in August:
- Schedule meetings with your elected officials or their staff.
- Send messages via social media.
- Send a letter to the editor.
- Attend a town hall meeting or invite your elected official to a local event.
For any questions, please email Jamie Tucker at email@example.com.
Thank you for your work on this important issue and best of luck in August!
PAN is the voice of the Parkinson's community in Washington, DC. In fiscal year 2014, PDF is supporting PAN with a grant of $200,000.
