Congress Must Act to Protect Medicare Benefits!

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) has received another important update from the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) about the fiscal cliff issues facing Congress that are important to the Parkinson's community.

From PAN:

This afternoon, the president is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders. While, disappointingly, it is increasingly unlikely a resolution will be reached before the nation falls off the fiscal cliff, Congress still has time to address another set of issues that are important to the Parkinson's community and needs to hear from you.

Congress typically acts in December to raise two Medicare reimbursement limits that are important to the Parkinson's community, but that has not happened this year. Unless Congress acts by December 31, here's what will happen:

  • People with Parkinson's will see their access to medically necessary therapy services limited. Twenty-five percent of Medicare beneficiaries with Parkinson's exceed the low annual cap Congress has placed on physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy, and rely on the availability of the exceptions process, which Congress traditionally extends annually.
  • Physicians and hospitals will face a 26.5% cut in pay for treating Medicare patients. Congress traditionally raises this payment rate annually.

Tell Congress to act today to protect access to therapy services and treatment that are critical to the Parkinson's community.

PAN is the voice of the Parkinson's community in Washington, DC. In fiscal year 2013, PDF is supporting PAN with a grant of $200,000.
