Many people often say that Parkinson's disease (PD) affects more than the person living with the disease - it affects the entire family. A care partner to a person with Parkinson's disease - whether a spouse, a child, a parent or a friend - can experience significant life changes when caring for a loved one living with PD. In this one-hour PD ExpertBriefing, Dr. Habermann explores strategies to ensure the caregiver takes care of him or herself, which she says will also benefit the person with PD. - Explore common emotional responses that Parkinson’s care partners may experience
- Discuss signs of depression in the person with Parkinson’s and the care partner
- Point to specific areas where the care partner may require help or assistance
- Identify resources available to care partners
Faculty:
Barbara Habermann, Ph.D., R.N.
Barbara Habermann, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Indiana University-Indianapolis. She received her B.S.N. from University of San Francisco, her M.N, with a specialty in neuroscience nursing, from the University of Washington, and her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Habermann also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington with a focus on family and caregiving. She worked as an advanced practice nurse for several years in Neurology and was the coordinator of a designated Parkinson’s Center.
Dr. Habermann has been conducting research with people with Parkinson’s and their family members aimed at improving the quality of life for 15 years.
