Encinitas Resident Invites Community to “Stand Up to Parkinson’s” at Paddle Board Event on Saturday, October 22
- Sep 12 2011
On Saturday, October 22 at 8:00 AM, Encinitas, CA resident Pamela Strom will hold “Stand Up to Parkinson’s” a paddleboard racing event, at Back Bay in Newport Beach, CA. This event will benefit the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF).
Ms. Strom decided to become involved in the cause because her mother-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s several years ago. Around the same time, Ms. Strom was becoming an active paddleboard racer. She decided to use her new hobby to organize an event that would benefit her mother-in-law and the local Parkinson’s community. To get her fundraising event rolling, Ms. Strom joined forces with the “PDF Champions” program, which assists grassroots fundraisers around the country.
“Stand Up to Parkinson’s” will include three paddleboard races: one for children, one for adults new to stand-up paddleboarding, and one for pros, as well as foot races. The day’s event will also feature refreshments, music and prizes. Educational materials will be available.
Ms. Strom invites the community to “Stand Up to Parkinson’s.” She said, “I hope that this event will provide a day of happiness and fun for those affected by Parkinson’s. I also hope to generate awareness and raise funds that will benefit the Parkinson’s community.”
PDF Executive Director Robin Elliott said, “PDF Champions like Ms. Strom remind me of what PDF does and why: because Parkinson’s disease has affected a friend or loved one – and one million other Americans – and we need to find a cure. We applaud Ms. Strom and our other grassroots fundraisers, whose efforts not only help PDF to fund most promising research, but also serve to raise awareness in communities around the US about the impact of this disease.”
Those interested in donating to Ms. Strom’s fundraiser can do so by contacting the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation by calling (800) 457-6676, emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or visiting http://support.pdf.org/standuptoparkinsonsrace.
Those interested in racing during “Stand Up to Parkinson’s” should visit active.com under Standup to Parkinson's Race a SUP-o-Run for more information. There is a $40 race fee for adult racers. Children race for $15. The event is free and open to all spectators.
