Consumer Cellular is celebrating surpassing the 1 million customer mark with a considerable gift to employees and charities.
The Portland-based wireless services provider will split $1 million between its employees and five national charities. The company's more than 750 employees will each receive a portion of $500,000, divided based on tenure. The balance will be evenly split between donations to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Meals on Wheels and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
Consumer Cellular focuses on adults over 50 years of age and offers no-contract service that allows customers to switch providers at any time with no penalty.
"Our approach has really resonated with a lot of individuals and families," said CEO John Marick.
Since 2005, the company has increased its customer base from 30,000 to 1 million, its revenue from $17 million to $250 million and its workforce from 30 employees to more than 750.
In August, the company opened a call center in Redmond with the capacity to employ 650 workers.
