PDF Creates Parkinson's Advisory Council

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) is thrilled to announce the formation of our new People with Parkinsonís Advisory Council (PPAC) and present its inaugural members!

PDF launched PPAC in summer 2006 to provide our various programs with the perspective of people with Parkinsonís that is so essential to our program development and priority setting.

ďHistorically, PDF has been committed to ensuring that the voice of those directly affected by Parkinsonís disease be heard,Ē said Robin Elliott, Executive Director of PDF. ďWe are continuing this tradition by creating a formal place at the table for people with Parkinsonís and their caregivers. This will ensure that their perspective, insight and experience are firmly embedded into how we think, how we work and how we plan for the future in all areas of our mission Ė be it research, education or advocacy.Ē

This past spring PDF invited nominations in search of individuals who demonstrate leadership within the Parkinsonís community and possess the interests, skills and commitment necessary to serve as a national representative for people with Parkinsonís disease. The depth and breadth of experience, skills and recognition among the individuals who expressed a desire to join the PPAC made for keen competition and difficult decision- making among members of the review and selection committee.

Of the 14 PPAC members who were selected, 11 are people with Parkinsonís disease and three are caregivers. These accomplished individuals come from diverse geographic regions and varied professional backgrounds that include research, medicine, law, technology and writing.

PPAC members will serve on the Council for two years. Their efforts will provide PDF with perspectives on research-funding priorities and ways that we can better serve people living with Parkinsonís through our information and education programs. PPAC members will also represent PDF within the local PD community and attend relevant conferences and meetings.

The PDF board and staff are extremely excited about the potential of the People with Parkinsonís Advisory Council for improving our work in research, education and advocacy and to strengthen our connection to the Parkinsonís community. Please join us in congratulating and welcoming the individuals listed below as they begin their PPAC tenure!
