Bruce Florence

In Memory of Bruce Florence
By Mary Stone

Bruce Florence founded the Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group (FHPSG) in April 2006. He reached out to people throughout the community and invited them to the group's meetings. The monthly meetings have averaged an attendance of 35 to 55 people with Parkinson's and their care partners. Bruce had a quiet way of inspiring others and fostered a positive, active outlook for the support group. He focused on what people with Parkinsonís disease could do and challenged them to do more. He was devoted to his Parkinsonís friends and offered moral support and assistance to everyone. In 2010 Bruce attended a workshop in Washington D.C., to become a PDF Research Advocate. Bruce initiated these FHPSG activities: A weekly PD exercise class in conjunction with Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center team; a Parkinsonís caregiver support group; participation in the Fountains Hills Adopt-A-Street program; a weekly art studio for PD artists and caregiver artists; and an annual Parkinsonís Juried Art Show for artists with PD and/or their caregivers co-sponsored by the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. The art show has been open to artists throughout the Phoenix, AZ, metropolitan area since 2008. Another of his achievements was a website for FPHSG: Pennies for Parkinsonís - Until there is a Cure. Over $9000 has been collected in Fountain Hills, AZ, and surrounding areas since 2008. Bruce Florence passed away on 02/09/2012. In his memory, a video he created is now on YouTube:
