New Booklet on PD Surgery

One of the most productive areas in the development of new therapies for Parkinson’s disease in recent years has been that of surgical techniques. In this area, the most important development has been the approach known as deep-brain stimulation (DBS), which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year for application in the area of the brain known as the subthalamic nucleus, where it has been found to be especially effective.

To be sure that these developments are understood throughout the Par-kinson’s community, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation has produced an easy-to-read book addressing all of the surgical approaches for PD treatment, including DBS. The book was written by Dr. Blair Ford, PDF’s medical advisor. Entitled “Surgery for Parkinson’s Disease”, the book discusses the kind of procedures currently available, the symptoms they are designed to treat, possible side effects, and much more.
