Barriers to Clinical Trial Participation

Why aren’t people with PD participating in clinical research?

In 2005, Harris Interactive® performed a survey on behalf of PDtrials, to look into these issues.

See the results:

  • 95 percent of people with Parkinson's agree that clinical trials are necessary to find better treatments.
  • 80 percent would be likely to participate in a clinical trial if one were available in their area.
  • However, only 11 percent of Parkinson's patients report that their physician has suggested that they participate in a clinical trial.
  • The majority of physicians who treat people with Parkinson's refer 10 percent or less of their patients for clinical trials.

To address these barriers, PDF created the Advancing Parkinson’s Treatments (APT) Initiative.
